District plans to fund SRO position after state cuts

SAND SPRINGS — The Sand Springs Board of Education at its June 1 meeting was updated about losing state funding for a School Resource Officer and plans to replace that SRO with the Sand Springs School District funding that position.

“One of the Resource Officers at the state level was defunded,” Superintendent Sherry Durkee said. “That I think is an important piece for us because we hired three of them. This one piece of funding we're losing paid for a full officer, and we're still going to fund that because they've become part of our system, I mean, they're one of us and so we'll continue to do that, and we'll ask the board to continue to prove that cost. But that's over $60,000 that I think is very worthy.”

Durkee updated the Board that the high school football field press box and middle school projects are on schedule, and the school district will be asking for board recommendations for an increase in breakfast and lunch prices next year.

Durkee said the school district is reviewing transfer requests and transfer appeals “The students who struggle with behavior and attendance are getting some letters now and right now, we've yet to have an appeal request. We'll still wait. Those will be in July if we do.”

Durkee told the Board that she recently closed its grandparents survey which included interest in grandparent caregivers utilizing the school district’s daycare for their grandchildren.

“I think we're going to glean about eight to 10 additional kids because of grandparents that can use childcare, which is kind of cool. It's been a coup for us,” she said. “So, our capacity will be 60 kids. And we won't reach full capacity probably until August, but we're getting up there.”
