Gas run to Ripley ends in arrest for fugitive and alleged accomplice

STILLWATER – A Drumrightwomanaccusedof harboring a fugitive has been ordered to appear before a Payne County judge on Aug. 12 for arraignment with an attorney on a two-count charge including possessing methamphetamine.

Quayla L. McCormick, 34, and Ryan Slingerland, 24, of Cushing, who was wanted for failing to appear in Payne County Drug Court on May 19 on burglary, stolen property and drug charges, were both arrested by Payne County Sheriff's Deputy Dalton Ross on July 3 at a Ripley gas station, court records show.

If convicted of giving aid to, transporting and concealing Slingerland to avoid arrest on an outstanding warrant, McCormick could be given up to 10 years in prison. If convicted of possessing methamphetamine, McCormick could be given a one-year jail term and $1,000 fine. She was released on $5,000 bond on July 4.

Cushing Police Officer Sara Reynolds had notified the sheriff's deputy that she had seen the pair in a vehicle she recognized and believed they might still be in the Cushing area, an affidavit alleged.

'As I passed Parrotte Road on State Highway 33 traveling eastbound, I observed a vehicle matching the description traveling westbound. I completed a U-turn and began to try and catch the vehicle,' which turned into a Ripley gas station, the deputy alleged in his affidavit.

'I walked up to the driver's window and knocked on it. I was able to see Slingerland in the front passenger seat through the windshield, with the seat laid back to attempt to hide himself. I walked to the passenger side and ordered Slingerland out. He initially did not comply.

'I tried the door handle, which was locked. I pulled my baton out and informed him I'd bust the window out if he did not comply. He opened the door and was informed he was under arrest. I asked her (McCormick) if Slingerland threw any dope out in the car. She informed me 'not that I knew of.' 'I was contacted by Officer Reynolds, who informed McCormick at 7:07 am that Slingerland had an active warrant through Payne County. I spoke with McCormick, who informed me that she did know that Ryan had an active warrant, and she did recall Officer Reynolds informing her that morning.

'She (McCormick) informed me that Ryan asked to go to Stillwater to his probation officer's office. She said she wanted to go fishing. That's why there were fishing poles in the vehicle. When I asked Slingerland where they were going, he informed me that there were going fishing on Dunkin Road and did not mention a probation officer.

'McCormick was placed under arrest for harboring. Deputy B. Guyot arrived on scene to search McCormick. Guyot transported McCormick to the Payne County Jail for me while I transported Slingerland.

'When I arrived at the jail, I pulled in behind Guyot, and she informed me that McCormick informed her she may have narcotics on her. Once in the jail, the changing room was opened to allow Guyot and McCormick to go inside. Guyot returned a small clear baggy with a white substance inside,' that fieldtested as methamphetamine, the deputy alleged in his affidavit.
