The 1986 state championship in baseball is still a big thing to me.

It’s been 40 years since the Drumright Tornadoes have won state in baseball. Their coach was Tony Moyer. They didn’t have an assistant coach, so Ronald Fowler, a sophomore, was their first-base coach.

Our hitting was great and our base running was ahead of its time. We had a very good pitching staff. If another team tried to get an extra base on a hit, our guys would throw them out. When we got to state, we played Minco at Konowa. It was supposed to be at Chandler Baseball camp, but it got rained out, so we played the first day at Konowa. We beat them 10-9.

Doug Fulkerson hit a walkoff 2 RBI single with two outs to win the game.

The pitchers were Pat Boston and Doug Fulkeson. The next day, we played one of the tournament favorites, Latta. Their earned pitching averages were amazing, but not by the end of the Drumright game. The Tornadoes trailed 8-6 going into the sixth inning. The Tornadoes blew Latta away, getting 14 runs in the sixth. Pat Burden hit a 3-run homer in walk-off style and we run-ruled Latta, 20-8.

It seemed like everyone hit a double that inning, others hit singles - Carl Sherwood, Wayne Williams, Brett Flewellyn, Barry Arden, who had a great batting average — he also pulled off a great double play in the first inning.

Garst layed down a great squeeze bunt to score a run. The state championship was against Dale. Tied 2-2 going into the sixth, Drumright got 3 runs in the sixth and 3 in the seventh to win 8-4. Pat Burden pitched a great game and Doug Fulkerson pitched great in relief in the final inning. The game ended at midnight. A party was held at the Cushing Pizza Hut later.

Seniors were Brian Burden, Pat Garst, and Barry Wells. Juniors were Pat Burden, Wayne Williams and Doug Fulkerson. Sophomores were Brett Flewellen, Barry Gibson and Carl Sherwood. Others on the team were Chris Sherwood, Vernon Moore, Mark Stephens, Benny Wilkerson, Steve Cargill and Ronald Fowler who did a great job coaching first base.

I would like to give condolences to the Gibson family. Billy Gibson, a friend of mine passed away just lately. Beth Gibson, Blake Gibson and Barry Gibson, I’m sorry for your loss. Also, Sherri Hammock died just lately. I went to Drumright High School and me and others hung out with her. When my mom died, Sherri’s daughter, Amber, played on the Oklahoma team out of Harrah. Sherri gave flowers to me with team Oklahoma on them.

Danny Hammock, Amber Hammock, I’m sorry for your loss. Brian Burden died several years ago.
