Cleveland schools, OBU partner

CLEVELAND — Cleveland Public Schools is partnering with Oklahoma Baptist University (OBU) to provide an affordable pathway for staff members interested in earning a college degree or pursuing advanced education.

Invest in Yourself. Invest in Your Future. Through this partnership, all Cleveland Public Schools support staff who are at least 21 years old and working either part-time or full-time are eligible to earn an undergraduate degree with free tuition through OBU's online programs.

“This incredible opportunity removes one of the biggest barriers to higher education and opens doors for employees who have always wanted to earn a bachelor's degree, advance their careers, or take the next step toward becoming a certified teacher,” Superintendent Sol Bayouth said.

For current certified staff members looking to continue their education, OBU also offers significantly reduced tuition rates on graduate programs, including the Alternative Teaching Certificate (ACCESS) and Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) programs. Eligible employees receive a tuition scholarship that reduces the cost to $275 per credit hour, and additional funding opportunities may be available through programs such as AVEDIS and TEACH grants.

Bayouth said as districts across Oklahoma continue to face educator shortages, Cleveland Public Schools are committed to developing talent from within.

“Whether you're a paraprofessional, administrative assistant, cafeteria worker, transportation employee, or any other member of our support team, this partnership creates a pathway to earning a degree and potentially entering the teaching profession without the burden of undergraduate tuition costs,” he said.

Bayouth said CPS staff members make a tremendous impact on students every day.

“This partnership with Oklahoma Baptist University is another way we're investing in the people who make Cleveland Public Schools special. If you've ever considered taking the next step in your education, there has never been a better time to explore the opportunity,” he said.
