Deadline to change party affiliation March 31

SAPULPA — Oklahomans who want to change their political party affiliation must submit their request by March 31, Creek County Election Board Secretary Vicki Martin said.

Voters may update their affiliation online through the Oklahoma Voter Portal or by completing a new voter registration application.

Martin said state law prohibits party affiliation changes from April 1 through Aug. 31 in even-numbered years.

“If we receive your request after March 31, we are required by law to hold that request and process it in September,” Martin said.

Oklahoma recognizes three political parties: Democratic, Republican and Libertarian.

State law requires voters to be registered members of a party to vote in that party’s primary election. Independent voters may participate only if a party opens its primary to them. Currently, no party allows independent voters to participate in its primary elections.

All registered voters, regardless of party affiliation, may vote in general elections. Voter registration applications are available online at the Oklahoma State Election Board website or at the Creek County Election Board, 230 E. Hobson Ave., Sapulpa. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
