CREEK COUNTY — Following the retirement of Clayton D. Johnson, Story L. Schankel assumed the position earlier this year and is now serving as acting U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of Oklahoma. Creek and Pawnee counties are among the 11 counties in the district.
Additional counties Schankel resides over are Tulsa, Osage, Rogers, Washington, Craig, Delaware, Mayes, Nowata, and Ottawa counties with federal courts located in Bartlesville, Miami, Pawhuska, Tulsa, and Vinita.
Schankel’s appointment was made pursuant to the Federal Vacancies Reform Act.
He joined the U.S. Marshals Service in 2010 after serving in the U.S. Air Force and working as a special agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. He transferred to the Northern District of Oklahoma in 2018 and has served in several leadership roles, including chief deputy U.S. marshal.
The U.S. Marshals Service carries out federal law enforcement responsibilities throughout the district, including apprehending fugitives, conducting sex offender investigations, protecting the federal judiciary and managing federal prisoners.
Schankel holds a bachelor's degree in professional aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and associate degrees in criminal justice and aircraft maintenance from the Community College of the Air Force.
