Christie’s walk-off helps Lady Tornadoes tame Lady Ponies

Tornado Watch

The Drumright Lady Tornadoes opened up their slow-pitch season with a bang, beating a bigger school — Kellyville, 10-9 on Brinlee Christie’s walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Lady Tornadoes started off with a 5-1 lead after one.

The lead-off batter for Kellyville hit a homer in the first and Kellyville led 1-0. But the Lady Tornadoes roared back with five runs in the first.

Makay Reed walked, Brinlee Christie singled, Evie Ools walked. Boston Lunsford was hit by a pitch, scoring Reed. Aubrey “Breezy” Brimmer singled in Christie. Braelin Wright singled in Lunsford and Brimmer. Addy Ingraham walked. Aubrey Allen walked, scoring Wright.

Kellyville came back with five runs in the top of the second, hitting the ball hard.

Coach Leslie Robinson intentionally walked the girl that hit the home run and I think that made a difference in the final score. In the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Tornadoes were tied up, but got two runs. Reed doubled, Christie singled, Ools singled in Zoe Nienhaus, who was running for Reed, who was injured on the play (an MRI has not yet come back).

Brimmer walked, Kaiten Roden, on a force play, knocked in Christie. Kellyville came back and tied the score at 9, with a run on the top of the seventh. With two outs, Brimmer, the pitcher, fielded a grounder and got out of a jam.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh and nobody on, Christie hit the game-winning walk off home run to give the Lady Tornadoes a 10-9 win.

Hitting for the Tornadoes were Brinlee Christie, 3-3 with 1 RBI and a home run; Kailen Rodin, 1-3 with 2 RBIs; Brain Wright, 1-1 with 2 RBIs; Breezy Brimmer, 2-2 with 1 RBI; Evie Ools, 2-3 with 1 RBI; Makay Reed 1-2; Aubrey Allen, 1-4, with 1 RBI, Boston Lunsford, 1 RBI.

On defense, Brimmer had help from Makay Reed in left, Lauren Janzen at short, Ools at first, Brinlee Christy was part of a double play, Addy Ingraham in center, Brain Wright in left, Aubrey Allen at catcher and Brimmer helped herself.

The game wasn’t totally pretty — first games hardly ever are. We had four errors in the game, but won when it counted.

Coaches are Leslie Robinson, Moses Williams and Kerik Brown.

Willow Mattox hit a walk-off single to help the Lay Tornadoes junior varsity to a 7-6 win, knocking in 2 runs for the game winner.
