The Tornadoes hosted Porter Friday night and won 57-33. Quarterback Garrett Wright rushed for 305 yards on 22 carries and nine touchdowns. Two of the touchdowns came in unusual ways. One was on an onside kick, where Garrett was put on the front line to keep Porter from recovering the kick. Porter kicked it right to Garrett, who picked it up and ran for a touchdown.
He also intercepted a pass and ran it back for a 75-yard touchdown. He broke quite a few tackles to do it.
Offensive coordinator Moses Williams said, “Garrett was 8 for 13 passing for 107 yards. Sammy Blackburn intercepted two passes, and Garrett intercepted two passes.
“Porter lined up the way we thought they would on defense, so we kept running the ball. We stayed plain and simple on offense. Porter made some adjustments at the half, and we came back with a few of our own. We were still able to run and pull things out the second half and execute,” Williams said.
“Sammy Blackburn and Zaidyn ‘Blue’ Stewart both blocked great. It was the offensive line’s best game.”
Offensive linemen were BB Barber, Kypton Ward, Anthony Fisher, Mikey Allen, tight end Conrad Reed, Miles McEntire, Aydin Coffelt, Dalton Collins, and Jay Paul Welch.
“Offensively, they blocked good enough to get 46 points,” Williams said. “We put in some new defensive alignments. We’re still missing tackles behind the line. We won the turnover battle. Porter had four turnovers.
Cane Nollabaugh played well on special teams Friday night. “Next game is at Salina. Coming in, they are athletic. They are 2-2 on the season. It’s a district game, important because it’s for playoff standings.
“It’s a long drive, two hours and two minutes, so our heads have to be right. They will be better than Porter. It will be a big test for us. We will need to learn from our mistakes, tweak
some things in practice,” Williams said.
Sammy Blackburn and Blue Stewart both made some nice catches.
Kypton Ward, Aydin Coffelt, Conrad Reed, Andrew Dearing, William Stump, Mikey Allen, Blue Stewart — who snuffed out a hook-and-lateral play and clobbered the ball carrier — and Howdy Wright did what they could. They played a real good second half.
They contained Porter’s best running back, Jacoby Jones. This guy is hard to stop. Our defense held him to 40 yards rushing the second half.
Jay Paul Welch kicked three extra points. Austin Tull recovered several onside kicks and played well on defense.
The Tornadoes will make the long trip to Salina Friday. Game starts at 7 p.m.
Tornado assistant coaches are Moses Williams, Hunter King, Kevin Gooch and James Osterhout. Head coach is Mark Ryan.
Garrett’s nine touchdowns are the most ever for 11-man. Britton Kelley had 11 in an 8-man game.
