SAND SPRINGS – The Sand Springs Board of Education on Monday learned that student enrollment for the fall semester has declined.
“We know that we have to be cautious and conservative when we enter into any kind of revenue year that we think there could be some opportunity for loss,” Superintendent Sue Durkee said. “Our enrollment was down this year. I’m cautious. I used to get super excited about enrollment until I finally figured out that there’s a 10-day drop period, which means after 10 days of non-attendance the kids get dropped. We’ll continue to watch, make sure that we’re doing everything we can to get kids in school. We do know birth rates are down, which doesn’t help. Enrollment across the state and public education is also down for a lot of different factors, I would throw in school choice as a piece of that.”
Durkee told the BOE that Charles Page High School hosted their college fair last week for parents and students.
“It’s always a great turnout,” she said. Durkee updated the BOE about Sand Springs Virtual Academy Edgenuity.
“My favorite thing to report is our first group of Edge students will graduate this spring with an associate’s degree and a high school diploma, which is pretty cool,” she said. “This is the first year we actually have 40 full kids in the program.”
Durkee told the school board that school safety continues to be a priority.
“We know the things that work with school safety, and so just that constant reminder,” she said. “I made a comment about how people weren’t thrilled with having classroom doors locked when we first started implementing that, but now it’s kind of fun to have to pull out my key to open a classroom door to go in to see a teacher.” shows — one at 5 p.m. and one at 7:30 p.m. Families can expect a night packed with daring acrobats, hilarious clowns, talented animal performers, and jawdropping stunts under the iconic big top tent.
