KELLYVILLE — The Bureau of Land Management will host a two-day wild horse and burro adoption event Aug. 15–16 at the Creek County Fairgrounds in Kellyville.
The event will feature approximately 120 animals, including adult and yearling horses and burros gathered from public lands in the western United States. Gates open at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15. Adoption hours are noon to 6 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 16.
Animals offered for adoption were removed from overpopulated herds on public rangelands in order to maintain healthy populations and protect natural resources. The BLM's adoption and sale program plays a key role in achieving long-term herd management goals. Since 1973, more than 280,000 animals have been placed in approved homes across the country.
Adoption applications will be reviewed and approved on-site by BLM staff. To qualify, adopters must be at least 18 years old and have no record of animal abuse. Facilities must include a minimum of 400 square feet of corral space per animal, along with access to food, water and shelter. Corral fences must meet the following height requirements: six feet for adult horses, five feet for yearlings, and four-and-a-half feet for burros.
All adopted animals must be transported in a covered, stock-type trailer with swing gates and solid sides and flooring. BLM personnel will be available to assist with loading and answer questions.
The Creek County Fairgrounds are located at 17808 W. Highway 66 in Kellyville. For more information, call 866-468-7826 or visit www.blm. gov.
