Oilton Police Chief resigns; interim chief appointed

OILTON — The Oilton Police Department is once again under new leadership following a resignation from the chief submitted last Thursday, Jan. 29. Chris Kirkpatrick submitted his resignation from the position of Oilton’s chief of police after informing city officials he was seeking opportunities outside the community, according to a statement released by the City of Oilton.

The resignation was shared with acting Mayor Julia Bagwell Thursday morning and in the interest of transparency an official statement was made public shortly after.

“At approximately 9:25 a.m. today (Jan. 29), Chief Kirkpatrick informed the City of Oilton that he is seeking opportunities outside of Oilton and has submitted his resignation. At this time, the City has appointed an Interim Police Chief to ensure continuity of operations and continued public safety,” she said.

According to her, as acting mayor she has the authority to make a temporary appointment until the Oilton City Council formally addresses the matter. She appointed Cameron Williams as interim police chief. Following the announcement, Bagwell indicated that leadership is opting to wait until the next regular meeting to formally appoint someone.

“I think right now with everything being good terms we will wait until the next meeting scheduled for Feb. 10,” she said when asked if a special meeting to address an official appointment would be made.

City officials said the public will be kept informed as additional updates become available.
