SAL Squadron 17 supports local youth, honors veterans through community partnership

SAND SPRINGS — The Sons of the American Legion (SAL) Squadron 17 in Sand Springs has continued its commitment to community service with a $600 donation to Venture Crew #2507 on April 21 at the Veterans Center. Representing SAL Squadron 17 Gary Myers emphasized that the contribution reflects a deeper partnership between the organizations.

“This Spirit of Scouting is demonstrated by the joint activities of the local chapter of Venture and the Sons of the American Legion,” Myers said. “Although donation is important, more so, is the joint action of these organizations as they place our flags on the burial sites of our veterans this Memorial Day at our local cemetery.”

Myers highlighted that the collaboration goes beyond financial support and focuses on shared service and honoring veterans within the community. The effort also coincides with National Military Appreciation Month in May during which several events are planned in Sand Springs.

“Some of the activities of recognizing National Military Appreciation Month… include military banners in place April 30,” Myers said. “A cultural museum opening May 7 at the previous Sand Springs library with local military memorabilia on display, and a presentation to Jim Metcalf, a Korean War veteran receiving a medal by a Korean ambassador at noon on May 9 at the Veterans Center.”

Additional events include a celebration honoring veteran Wayne Webster’s 100th birthday at 6 p.m. also on May 9 at the golf course banquet hall and an Armed Forces Day observance on May 16.

Myers also outlined the mission and ongoing work of SAL Squadron 17 within the community.

“To present a sense of individual obligation to the community and sanctify our friendship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness,” Myers said, quoting the organization’s purpose.

He added that local efforts include a $1,000 scholarship for high school students and financial and material support for a youth archery program.

SAL Squadron 17 welcomes sons of veterans and community members to participate in its activities. Meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Veterans Center and the group also hosts Saturday morning breakfasts for veterans and their families.
