In other matters, Superintendent Sherry Durkee informed the Board that Sand Springs was recognized recently by the Oklahoma Public School Resource Center.
The Oklahoma Public School Resource Center announced the winners of its inaugural Breakthrough School Awards during the Oklahoma School Innovation Summit June 4 at Embassy Suites in Norman.
Twenty-four Oklahoma public schools and districts were recognized for driving academic growth, strengthening instructional leadership and creating measurable progress for students.
“What an incredible way to conclude our conference by recognizing the educators and administrators shaping the future of Oklahoma classrooms," said OPSRC Executive Director Dr. April Grace. "This award ceremony has given us an opportunity to celebrate these accomplishments while learning from schools and districts that are creating meaningful results for students." The Breakthrough School Awards highlight schools in four categories focused on growth, long-term success and high performance across di erent school communities: Overcomer, Sustainability, Platinum 70 and Platinum 70 Plus.
OPSRC used its statewide data matrix dashboard to analyze multiple indicators of student success and identify schools and districts excelling in areas like academic growth, consistency over time, graduation outcomes and student progress.
The 2026 Breakthrough School Award winners in the K8 category included Cottonwood Public School, Oakdale Public School, Osage Hills Public School and Pioneer Public School.
Elementary division honorees included Chisholm Elementary School in Edmond, Clara Reynolds Elementary School in Harrah, Frederick Elementary School and Sangre Ridge Elementary School in Stillwater.
Honorees in the K12 district categories included Arapaho-Butler, Broken Arrow, Chisholm, Deer Creek, Dove Schools of Oklahoma City, Hilldale, Navajo, Olive, Piedmont, Sand Springs, Santa Fe South Charter, Stonewall, Tahlequah, Union, Warner and Yukon.
"We had a notifi cation that out of schools our size, we actually won the Overcomer award, which means our academic growth was better than every school that's our size," Durkee said. "It was good because we have put a huge focus on tier one instruction with the district adopted curriculum and made a big deal out of making sure teachers were following that. So, that was a coup for us. It was fun to receive that award." Durkee also updated the Board about the Sand Springs Public Schools Early Learning Center and the progress of creating more daycare space.
"We increased our capacity to 60 babies this year and it was 40 at the end of 2026," she said, “It's a big, big deal.
I'm so proud of it. It's one of maybe my proudest things that we've done since I've been superintendent. So, that'll continue, but we have six rooms that are dedicated daycare rooms."
