Obannon’s top-10 finish leads Drumright toward regionals

DRUMRIGHT — Senior Bryson Obannon’s top-10 finish at Henryetta and two sub-20-minute performances give Drumright a front runner to watch as its cross country season moves toward regional competition.

Drumright is assigned to the Class A regional Oct. 17 at Nichols Park in Henryetta. The girls race begins at 1 p.m., followed by the boys at 1:45 p.m. State qualifiers will advance to the Oct. 24 championship meet.

Obannon earned his highest individual placing in the collected season results at the Henryetta Invitational on Sept. 12, finishing 10th in the A-2A boys race in 20:50.0. The meet gave him experience racing at Nichols Park, the site of Drumright’s upcoming regional.

His fastest recorded 5K came nine days earlier at Rogers State’s Distance After Dark, where he finished 60th in the open 2A-4A race in 19:50.2. Although his Henryetta placing was higher, his Rogers State time was nearly a minute faster, reflecting the differences between the courses and competitive fields.

Obannon followed his top-10 finish by returning below 20 minutes at Oklahoma Baptist University on Sept. 19. He placed 39th in the 1A-4A race in 19:56.88, about 53 seconds faster than his Henryetta performance and within seven seconds of his Rogers State mark.

Those two closely matched sub-20-minute finishes give him a useful target for regionals. His Henryetta result adds experience at the qualifying site, though the regional field and race conditions will determine what it takes to advance.

Earlier in the season, Obannon showed consistency over a shorter distance. He placed 25th in Stroud’s 3,200-meter race Aug. 15 in 11:59.448, then finished 29th at Prague Aug. 22 in 11:57.18. The two performances were separated by just over two seconds.

Sophomore Tyler Rinehart also enters the postseason with a faster late-season mark. His latest available 5K was 25:07.95 at OBU, where he placed 97th. That time was about 1:14 faster than his 26:22.4 at Rogers State and just over three minutes faster than his 28:11.5 at Henryetta.

Rinehart made an earlier gain over 3,200 meters, lowering his time from 16:38.896 at Stroud to 15:25.94 at Prague, a difference of nearly 1:13. While different courses affect those comparisons, his results show faster recorded performances at both distances during the season.

The collected girls results include juniors Willow Mattox and Torin Bray. At Stroud, Mattox placed 62nd in the 1,600-meter race in 7:58.172, while Bray finished 68th in 8:16.000. At Prague, Bray placed 81st over 2,400 meters in 12:14.04, followed by Mattox in 107th at 13:11.56.

Mattox later finished 141st in Rogers State’s open two-mile race in 17:25.3. Because those races covered different distances, their times do not establish a direct improvement trend.

Obannon’s Henryetta finish was Drumright’s only top-10 placing in the collected high school results. His return below 20 minutes at OBU, paired with Rinehart’s faster September performance, gives the Tornadoes benchmarks to pursue when regional places determine who continues to state.
