U-Haul chase ends on Hill

DRUMRIGHT — David Lee Huskey, a 23-year-old Drumright resident, is facing eight counts including attempting to elude police and driving under the influence following a criminal felony case that was filed in the district court of Creek County on Nov. 26.

On Nov. 17, around 7 p.m. Drumright Police Department Officer Gerad Poole reported in a probable cause affidavit that he was on patrol when he saw a U-Haul truck fail to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Virginia Avenue and Broadway Street. The action led to Poole activating his emergency lights for a traffic stop.

“The vehicle proceeded to increase speed before turning north bound onto Harley (Avenue),” said Poole. “The vehicle continued down Harley north bound approaching speeds of 80 to 85 miles per hour.”

Poole followed the vehicle observing numerous traffic infractions including continued failure to stop at multiple intersection stop signs in town, failing to signal, and speeding. The truck turned onto Truck Bypass and began to travel west over the speed limit failing to maintain the proper traffic lane — “traveling left of center causing vehicle to get over and avoid a collision”.

At the intersection of Bypass and Highway 33, Poole reported the vehicle did not make a turn and instead drove straight; off the roadway, before getting stuck on the side of a hill causing the vehicle to finally come to a stop.

“The driver was attempting to exit the vehicle through the passenger side,” said Poole.

Within five minutes from the initial observation, Huskey had been detained. Poole performed a weapons check and noted the U-Haul has an Arizona license plate. Huskey reportedly told Poole that he had not been operating the vehicle and that he had “only had a couple of shots of alcohol”.

Huskey was evaluated by first responders before being placed in an ambulance for further treatment. A wrecker service took possession of the U-Haul and Huskey was eventually booked into Creek County jail without incident.

Huskey’s case was filed on Nov. 26 with charges of eluding or attempting to elude a police officer. Court documents show the case is scheduled for a hearing on Dec. 2
