Unopposed Candidates to Become Elected Officials by Default

CREEK COUNTY — Several Creek County leadership positions may be filled automatically following the statutory filing period, as a number of candidates filed unopposed. Oklahoma election law designates any unopposed candidate become an elected official by default unless a valid contest of candidacy is filed within a certain timeframe from candidate filing closure.

As of Dec. 8 there were a number of unopposed candidates in Creek County including Zeddie Cantrell for Central Tech Center Board Member for Office one, Lake Barber for Drumright Public Schools Office four, Emily Snow for DPS Office five, and Mark Whinnery for City of Drumright Commissioner Ward two and Terry Young for Ward four.

Under state statute, unopposed candidates do not appear on a ballot. A contest of candidacy for an unopposed candidate may be filed by any eligible voter within four to ten days after filing closes. Candidate filing closed on Dec. 4 meaning contest filing was not available until Dec. 8 and will remain open until Dec. 14.

“If the contest is not deemed valid then the unopposed candidate will be the winner by default,” explained Payne County Election Board Secretary Courtney Callison.

In the event that a contest is valid and a candidate is removed the governing entity is responsible for appointing a new member. No election proceeds until all contests are fully resolved.

Unopposed candidates will assume office automatically once the contest period closes if without challenge. Opposition races will appear on the February ballot — any candidate who receives a majority of votes will be elected immediately, otherwise, the top two will move forward to the April 2026 general election.
