Tornadoes have frustrating week

Tornado Watch with Robert Marshall

Saturday night, the Drumright Lady Tornadoes played Hominy and lost 57-42. You can say,”What a blowout,” but the Lady Tornadoes actually had a 16-4 lead after one quarter.

Alyssa Roe got the Lady Tornadoes off to a great start with 7 points, hitting one three. Also reading the Hominy defense, Makay Reed scored 4. Brailyn Wright had 2 and Evie Ools led the Lady Tornadoes with 15 points — 10 of them in the third quarter, dominating Hominy inside.

Hominy had two big girls, they alternated one, about 5-11 and another, about the same size. But then the dreaded second quarter happened. The Lady Bucks were led by Keagan Walker, who had 24 points. The second quarter has been our weakest quarters all season. The biggest problem is free-throw shooting — 14 of 36 free throws — which is barely over 40 percent. We don’t seem to realize that can win or lose a game.

The boys team isn’t that much better at free throws. Don’t get me wrong, the girls played as hard as they could, but kept shooting themselves in the foot. Ools led with 15 points and a bunch of rebounds; Roe had 9 points, Reed, 7 with good hustle; Lauren Janzen hit a three and finished with 5 points — she had quite a few steals. As did Roe and Reed. Wright had 4 points and made it miserable for Hominy ball handlers. Torin Bray had 2 points; Aubrey (Breezy) Brimmer had one point and played hard. Also playing hard was Aubree Allen. Hominy seemed to focus on Janzen and she didn’t get to shoot as many shots. She had 14 points in the first quarter of the Woodland game. I think there was a little brother-in-law between the Woodland and Hominy coaches.

The boys game was a frustrating heartbreaker as Hominy won on a last second shot from 3, by a player who hadn’t hit a three all season. It didn’t make any sense, but what did make sense was, he was 6-6 and nobody could block his shot, or throw his shot off. As it was, we were late getting to him as he hit the game winner and Hominy won 40-38.

Hominy was ultra physical. One of these players undercut Keaton Jensen and he took a bad fall. Other stuff happened too, just watch the game on Hominy Buck Pride on You Tube.

On the flip side, our guys always look like they’ve got a huge chip on their shoulders. It’s like they can’t get motivated unless the get under the other team’s skin. But I’m definitely not blaming us for the undercut and the other things that happened. The sad thing is, we were ahead 90-percent of the game — once by nine points early.

Jensen had 19 points, hitting a three and driving to the basket, Garrett Wright had 12 points, hitting two threes, but like Janzen in the girls game, he was guarded tightly.

Keegan Ward battled hard, and has five points on three out of four shots. Rhett Cearly had 2 points and several blocks, Kypton Ward played hard. Also playing hard were Auston Tull, who was all over the place hustling and Zaiden (Blue) Stewart.

The boys led late in the game, 37-32, but Hominy finished the game on an 8-1 run. Hominy’s 6-6 player blocked several shots, but our guys always thought he was around, even when he wasn’t.

I have to give Hominy credit — their coach had a good game plan.

I wish our teams could defend their home court better. There was only a two-man referee crew ant they got overwhelmed, The game needed a three-man crew.

Coaches for the Lady Tornadoes are Lauren Campo and Alyssa Fuxa. The boys coaches are Jason “sharp-dressedman” Bray.
