The Drumright varsity Tornadoes finished third in the Mounds tournament on Saturday beating Mounds 9-1.
We actually played Chouteau first and lost 9-0. We got in a 6-0 hole by the end of the first. We could have gotten back in it, but we stranded base runners. We couldn’t get them in.
But as bad as the Chouteau game was, the third place game went real good for us. Our first loss this year was to Mounds 5-2, but this game we wanted really bad.
We were up 1-0 in the second inning but we got 3 runs in the bottom of the second. Sammy Blackburn beat out a throw to first, freshman Howdy Wright tripled scoring blackburn, Garrett Wright hit a double after a wild pitch scoring Howdy, Brady Osborne walked and another wild pitch scored Garrett.
Speaking of Garrett Wright, he struck out 13 batter in 5 innings. They couldn’t hit his fastball.
Mounds scored 5 runs in the bottom of the third, Cody Gregory was hit by a pitch, Lincoln Fisher doubled, Howdy walked, Conrad Reed singled in Gregory and Fisher. Garrett then tripled in Howdy and Reed, and an Osborne ground out scored Garrett.
Jagger Willing and Austin Tull both hit singles before Mounds finally got us out.
If the Tornadoes keep the walks and errors down, we can win most of the games.
Garrett didn’t need much help from our defense, but he got it anyways from Tull air third and Reed at catcher.
Hitting for Drumright new Garrett 2-3 with 2 RBI’s, Osborne 1-2 with an RBI, Willing 2-3, Tull 2-3, Gregory was hit by a pitch, Fisher 1-3, Blackburn 1-3, Howdy 1-1 plus two walks, and Reed was 1-3 with 2 RBI’s.
The Tornadoes will have played Paden Tuesday at Paden, Morrison Friday in Drumright. Districts have come out as the Tornadoes will play Savanah at home for the second year in a row. This will be April 23 and 24. The tornadoes are 10-8 for the season.
The varsity baseball coach is Hunter Kirby assisted by B.J. Osborne and Terry Mattox.
Lady Tornadoes The Lady Tornadoes played Cushing Monday in Drumright. Cushing is a 4A school in most sports but are 5A in slow pitch.
The Lady Tigers won 15-2 but for four innings Cushing led 6-2 but in the fifth they got on a rampage and scored 9 runs. They had 11 hits in the fifth and 2 costly Drumright errors in the second game.
The first four innings on defense Brinlee Christy at third, Lauren Janzen at short, Boston Lunsford at second, Paisley Christy at catcher made a force play ay home, Addy Ingraham in center, and Kailan Roden in left kept it from getting out of control early.
Hitting for the Lady Tornadoes were Brinlee 2-2, Lunsford who hit a home run in the bottom of the second to tie it up 1-1 after 2. Aubree Brimmer 102 with I RBI. Paisley 1-2, Evie Ools 1-2 and Kailan Roden 1-1.
One of the main problems for us was hitting into double plays as that happened two times. Actually one out was because we drifted too far off base. We had 5 errors, Cushing only had one. For Cushing Harli York had 4 RBI’s, Ava Hebensberger had 4 RBI’s and a homer in their game with Depew. Talyn Minney had 2 RBI’s, Macy Griffith 2 RBI’s, Taylor McKiddy 2 RBI’s, Faith Kessler 1 RBI, Mattie Terrell 3 hits, and Zoe Ledgerwood had an RBI.
Cushing run-ruled Depew later. The it was Drumright and Depew’s time to play each other.
The Lady Tornadoes had 2-1 lead early but Depew made some unreal defensive plays to stay in the game. They hit two home runs and were ahead 4-2 going into the bottom of the seventh. The Ladies had been stranding base runners but in the bottom of the seventh the bats came alive.
They stranded zero baserunners. Paisley singled, Aubrey Allen had a long single, Janzen popped up the ball ended up going behind the Depew catcher so we had the bases loaded when Avery Todd came to bat and she almost knocked it over the fence. Zoe Neinhaus Running for Paisley, Ingraham had the walk off game winner when she doubled in the winning two runs that were Janzen and Roden running for Todd.
We didn’t even have an out. Ingraham was 2-4 with 2 RBI’s, Paisley was 2-3 with 1 RBI. Lunsford Brimmer, Braelin Wright, and Allen were all 2-3, Janzen 1-3 with 1 RBI, Todd 1-1 with 1 RBI, Ools 1-3.
Defensive help for Brimmer at pitcher came from Janzen, Lunsford, Brinlee, and Ools at first.
Girls are coached by Leslie Robinson, Moses Williams, and Kerick Brown.
The Ladies will have played Davenport at Davenport Monday, then they will be playing in the Perkins Festival Friday.
Lady Tornado districts are at Hominy. Hominy doesn’t play in our conference anymore but the OSSAA in it’s infinite wisdom keeps wanting us to play them even though it always a headache playing at Hominy.
The other team is Ketchum, but I’d rather play at Ketchum even though it’s 100 miles away than at Hominy.
