The Drumright Tornadoes travelled to Gore last Thursday night. Gore is quite a few miles past Muskogee. I may be wrong, but I figure by the end of the season, we will have travelled 770 miles one way in 5 games. We’ve only had one game that was less than 100 miles away. Thanks OSSAA.
Drumright’s first time with the ball, we got down to the Gore 7 yard line before Gore held us. Then the first play, Gore went 90 yards in one play. Gore then made us punt. Gore’s second offensive play, Gore ran 93 yards, but it was called back because of a penalty.
The Tornadoes’ third possession, we ran a fake punt, where Garrett Wright threw a 50 yard pass to Sammy Blackburn. We ended up scoring on a Garrett Wright 7 yard run. Jay Welch, who kicked 8 straight extra points last week in a 56-12 win over Mounds, kicked his ninth straight extra point, to make the score Gore 14-7.
Then other than Andrew Deering’s 63 yards rushing on 11 carries for the game, there were no more highlights.
The rest of the game, the Tornadoes gave up 26 points in the second quarter. That meant the clock ran the whole second half. It’s kind of like the mercy rule in 8 man.
I’ve been told when we don’t have school on game night, it breaks the routine, and we don’t play well. Sometimes momentum doesn’t go our way. It hurts to see it.
So is this a new form of a mercy rule for 11 man football? I guess I should be glad we’re not Velma-Alma, who went back down from 11 man to 8 man, and have been beaten by the mercy rule just about every time. I’m glad we are not them.
The next game is with defending state champ Talihina, at Talihina, 200 miles away.
Actually, Velma did win a game against Elmore City-Pernell 18-12. Velma has been mercy ruled 5 times.
The All-Conference girls softball players team came out lately. They were Alyssa Rae, Kaiton Vann, Tinley Thurman, and Aubrey Allen on the first team. Honorable mention were Lauren Janzen and Brae Wright.
Lady Tornado coaches are Lezlie Robinson and Emily Amen.
Tornado football coaches are Mark Ryan, Morris Williams, Hunter Kirby, Kevin Gooch, and James Osterhout.
