The tournament actually had three sites: Kellyville, Prague and Beggs. There were 30 teams.
Early in the week, the Lady Tornadoes beat Stroud at Stroud, 5-1. Kaiton Vann only gave up three hits and struck out six batters. Hits were by Brae Wright, who had two, Alyssa Roe, Lauren Janzen, Brinlee Christy, Aubree Brimmer and Tinley Freeman.
The next game was at Kellyville against Vian, and the Lady Tornadoes devastated them, 14-1. Vian had some pretty tall girls but didn’t seem to know the game.
Hitting were Roe, 3-for-4 with three RBIs; Addy Ingraham, who has been hitting the ball hard, 2-for-2 with two RBIs; Vann, 2-for-2 with two RBIs; Freeman, who hit a triple, 2-for-2 with one RBI; Aubrey Allen, 1-for-2 with one RBI; Brae Wright, 1-for-3; Brinlee Christy, 1-for-4 and did well at catcher; and Lauren Janzen, 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
Tinley Freeman pitched a great game and struck out three, maybe more. I was late getting there.
The next game was against Sapulpa, who was 6-1 at one time, and we lost, 1-0. The game only lasted 55 minutes, so this one only went four innings. With a lot of teams there, they went to a time limit.
The Ladies stranded seven base runners, as Sapulpa plays great defense. Sapulpa only had five base runners. Defensive plays were made by Tinley Freeman, Brae Wright, who made a great play at third, Aubree Brimmer, Kaiton Vann and Brinlee Christy.
The next day, the Lady Tornadoes traveled to Prague, where all the 1-1 teams went. The first game was against Quapaw, and the Lady Tornadoes won, 9-6, but gave up five runs on five errors. Our only saving grace was 10 hits.
Vann was 2-for-2 with four RBIs and a home run; Aubrie Allen, 2-for-2; Ingraham, 1-for-2 with one RBI; Christy, 1-for-3 with one RBI; Janzen, 1-for-2; Brae Wright, 1-for-3; Freeman, 1-for-2; and Boston Lunsford, one RBI.
This set up an old-rival showdown with Cushing. The Ladies lost in extra innings, 9-7. I’m sure it was the tie-breaker rule.
Cushing’s Ava Hebensperger hit a home run, and Cushing was up, 3-1, but the Lady Tornadoes came back and tied the game at 3. The game went to the tie-breaker.
The Lady Tornadoes outhit Cushing, 8-7, but Cushing had no errors, while Drumright had four. We had more runners on base against Sapulpa and had more hits than Cushing. Oh, what might have been.
Hitting were Vann, 2-for-3 with one RBI; Janzen, 2-for-3; and Roe, Christy and Lunsford, 1-for-3, with one RBI.
Even though we beat Stroud, 5-1, the last three games were really close ones, plus the last inning against Quapaw. If the Ladies ever figure out not to give up the big inning and keep the errors down, they will be OK.
The head coach is Leslie Robinson, Alyssa Fuxa is the assistant, and Moses Williams was an assistant Friday.
The Ladies will play Tuesday by the time you read this, then have no more games from Aug. 26 through Aug. 31. Tuesday’s game will be at Kellyville, a three-way with Kellyville and Ripley.
In cross country, coached by Lauren Campo, several results came from Stroud. Bryson “O” Bannon finished 23rd out of 74 runners in the two-mile race. His run was under 12 minutes. Willow Mattox finished 55th, running one mile in 7:58. Torin Bray finished 62nd, running one mile in 8:17.
