SAPULPA — Mannford’s Brett Wilson swept his heat race, led all 40 laps of the feature main and walked away with the David Stephenson Classic Saturday at Creek County Speedway.
There are nights when a driver wins a race.
And there are nights when a driver stages a hostile takeover.
Saturday belonged to Brett Wilson.
The Mannford driver turned the David Stephenson Classic at Creek County Speedway into a wire-towire statement, winning his heat race and then leading all 40 laps of the United Sprint League feature to collect one of the biggest local racing victories of the summer.
Wilson’s night started strong and never really changed direction.
He won the second USL heat race, then rolled into the feature with the same speed and control. Once the green flag dropped, Wilson went to the front and stayed there.
All 40 laps. That’s not easy to do at Creek County. The quartermile dirt track is a bullring in the truest sense of the word.
The corners come fast, the straights disappear almost as soon as they begin, and, in a 40-lap feature, traffic becomes part of the race before a leader has time to find his crease. One bad lane choice in lapped traffic can erase a lead in seconds.
Wilson never gave the field that opening.
The victory paid $2,022 to win and $225 just to start, giving the David Stephenson Classic a little more weight than an ordinary Saturdaynight feature. The event honors Stephenson, a longtime Oklahoma sprintcar racer with deep ties to the local racing community.
For Wilson, though, once the helmets went on, sentiment and provenance gave way to business.
Forty laps is a long time to be perfect. Creek County’s clay gives a driver plenty of opportunities not to be. Wilson found a way to avoid it all and left little question about which local performance mattered most.
He did not sneak into Victory Lane.
He did not inherit it.
He earned it the oldfashioned way — by getting to the front and refusing to leave.
For 40 laps Saturday night, every driver in the feature at Creek County Speedway knew exactly where Wilson was.
