Lady Tornadoes beat Strother, lose to Oilton

The Drumright Lady Tornadoes softball team beat Strother early in the week 9-5. It was a pitchers duel to start, going into the top of the sixth, our ladies were ahead 2-0, but Strother scored 2 runs to tie it up.

But the Lady Tornadoes scored 7 runs to go up 9-2.

Boston Lunsford led off with a double, Brinlee Christy walked, Tinley Freeman singled, a wild pitch scored Lunsford, Aubree Brimmer doubled in Kaiton Vann, who was running for Christy, and Freeman. Addy Ingraham’s bunt single scored Brimmer.

Alyssa Roe had a triple, Lauren Jansen had an infield single scoring Roe, Kaiton Vann doubled, Brae Wright’s sacrifice fly scored Jansen. Lunsford actually doubled twice in the bottom of the sixth. Both Kaiton Vann and freshman pitcher Gracie Riel had both pitched real good till they had been out there pitching for 5 innings, and you can only do so much in the crappy heat.

At 9-2 Lady Tornadoes, it looked like Mounds might get a ton of runs and come back, but great plays by Lauren Jansen, Boston Lunsford, and Alyssa Roe helped Vann out. Vann also struck out 6 batters, Vann struck out 9, and had help from Brimmer, Christy, Wright, and Freeman. Jansen, Vann, Lunsford, and Ingraham had 2 hits, Roe, Wright, Freeman, and Brimmer all had 1 hit.

This set up a rematch of the conference finals between Drumright and Oilton, when Oilton won 4-1. Oilton overcame 8 walks, and a hit batsman to beat the Lady Tornadoes 12-4. It was 4-1 Oilton when Kaiton Vann blasted a 3 run homer way over the fence, but that was as much as the Lady Tornadoes did, as Oilton’s Hallie Holm was 5 for 5 from the plate, she also hit a 2 run homer.

The Ladies were psyched up going into the game but ended up psyched out. There was only 1 inning Oilton didn’t score in, they scored 1 in the first, 2 in the second, 1 in the third, 2 in the fifth, 4 in the sixth, and 2 in the seventh.

It was 4-4 going into the fifth, the Ladies were trying too hard and made 7 errors. But you have to give Oilton credit, Oilton only had 2 errors in the 7 innings. But they walked 8 batters, and hit 1. If they do that in regionals they might be dangerous. The Lady Tornadoes stranded 14 base runners.

Hitting for Drumright were Vann 2 hits, Roe walked 3 times, and was hit once, Jansen 1 for 3, Wright walked in Freeman, who had walked, Christy 1 hit 2 walks, Brimmer 1 hit, Freeman 1 hit, Aubree Allen 1 hit.

For Oilton Holm 5 for 5, Claire James 3 hits, Jayden Smith 1 hit, but 2 good sacrifice bunts, Kaylee Hopkins 1 hit, Pattie Smith 1 hit, Kennison Prather 1 hit, Hailey James 1 hit, Brooklyn Poole 1 hit.

For Drumright Vann struck out 2. For Oilton Pattie Smith struck out 2, and Hallie Holm struck out 5. In a couple of weeks Drumright will host districts against Yale, and Oilton. Oilton will host districts in class B against South Coffeyville. Drumright will play Yale at Yale on Thursday. Drumright coaches are Leslie Robinson, and Emily Aman. Oilton’s coach is Aria Cole.
