OILTON — The Oilton Lady Panthers didn’t just beat Yale on Tuesday night — they pounced early, clawed out a crooked inning, and scratched their way to a 9–6 win that had the home fans grinning from ear to ear.
It all started in the bottom of the first when Karlie Kennedy worked a walk and then showed off her wheels, stealing third before jogging home on an Ashley Rosenquist groundout. Moments later, Paydee Smith punched a single through the infield to bring in another run. Just like that, Oilton was up 2–0 and the Lady Panthers looked hungry.
Yale tied it briefly in the second, but then Oilton flipped the game on its head. Five runs in the bottom half of the inning sent the dugout into a frenzy. It began with a walk to Dani Kennedy, a sharp grounder from J. Smith that forced an error, and then pure chaos when a perfectly placed bunt turned into a three-base error that cleared the bags. Add in RBI knocks from Karlie Kennedy and Rosenquist, and suddenly it was 7–2 Lady Panthers.
The Oilton girls didn’t just take the lead — they stole the show.
Kennedy was unstoppable at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two stolen bases and three RBIs. Every time she came up, Yale’s infielders looked like they were checking the outfield fence just to see how far she was going to hit it. Smith matched her stroke for stroke, racking up three hits of her own, while Jadeann Smith and Je Cox each chipped in multiple hits to keep the lineup humming.
In the circle, Paydee Smith was steady and strong. She struck out six and walked only two across five and a third innings, holding Yale to just two hits before the Bulldogs worked late rallies on free passes. Dani Kennedy came in to clean up, and the Panthers closed the door.
By the third inning, Oilton’s bats were still talking. J. Smith roped a single, Kennedy ripped another RBI shot, and the Lady Panthers pushed the margin to 8–2. They added one more in the fifth when J. Smith smacked a double to center and came home on Kennedy’s line drive. Nine runs on 12 hits — not too shabby for a team that looked every bit in rhythm.
Yale scratched out six runs with patience at the plate, but Oilton always had the answer. Every time the Bulldogs tried to claw back, the Lady Panthers tightened their grip. The final out drew cheers from the bleachers and a satisfied smile from Head Coach Asea Cole, who had watched her lineup turn nine runs into a good night’s work.
So while the Bulldogs head off to Woodland next, Oilton walks away with momentum — and a scorebook full of hits from Kennedy, Smith, Cox, Rosenquist, and J. Smith. Tuesday night proved once again that when the Lady Panthers find their stride, they don’t just win, they make it a show.
