Tornado teams finish second in Prue Tournament
DRUMRIGHT — Early in the week, the Drumright boys and girls played Olive again, in Drumright.
Lady Tornadoes
The first game was a blowout in Olive — well, it was the same this time, only Olive’s defense was a little more physical. But the Lady Tornadoes still won, 43-17.
It was the first game back from the holidays and both teams were a little rusty.
Evie Ools again got things going with 7 in the first, shooting 3 for 4 from the line, Brailey Wright also added 6 off the bench and Makay Reed had four. Olive struggled from the free throw line. The second quarter, Olive’s defense played real well and held the Lady Tornadoes to 5 points, but they could only get 1 point and the score was 22-5 at half time.
Again, the Lady Tornadoes caused chaos. In the third, Lauren Jazen and Alyssa Roe each had 5 with both hitting threes. Addie Ingraham also hit a three and Olive led 38-11 going into the fourth.
The fourth was Olive’s best as they outscored Drumright 6-5.
Leading the scoring was Ools, 7; Wright, 7; Ingraham hit two threes and shot the ball a bunch, as did Reed. Torin Bray had three and quite a few assists. Boston Lunsford had 2 underneath. Zoe Neinhuis had 2.
Playing hard were Aubrey Brimmer, Mary Meyers, Cali Jo Deshazer, Willow Mattox and Kailin Rosen.
For Olive, Aliyah Colbert hit 6 free throws, Chloe Henshaw, 5 (four of them in the fourth); Kierston Ott, 2; McKenzie Olinger, 2; Elle Harmon, 2. Also playing hard were Abby Ochoa, Lilly West was 2-2 from the line, Jaycee Jenkins and Chloe Alberty.
The Hilton coaches are Jon and Stephanie Peveler.
The Lady Tornado Coaches are Lauren Campo and Alyssa Fuxa.
Varsity Boys
The varsity boys game was as physical as it gets in both ends, but one of our players got slammed to the ground. Olive got to shoot 28 free throws to our 7.
I know one of the refs, and he’s a good guy, I just don’t know how long he’s reffed.
Olive won the game 48-44. The Tornadoes have been banged up. Olive probably made 22 of the 28 free throws which is excellent. Coach Jason “Sharp-Dressed-Man” Bray was going to make sure Breyer Maxville didn’t get going and surrounded him, but Olive changed things up and Maxville had quite a few assists, mostly to Jaxson Beckle, who had 11 points. Also playing good was Gavin Nickells who led Olive in scoring with 13, hitting a three. He also had some assists. Kevin Peeler had 8 points, hitting 2 threes; Kellen Peeler had 7, hitting 4 free throws when it counted; Maxville had 9 and was 5-6 at the line. River Stonecypher and Noah Kelsey played hard off the bench.
For Drumright, Keaton Jensen had 15, hitting two threes with about 1:25 and the Tornadoes down 43-33. When Jensen hit. Three, he was fouled and made all three free throws; Garrett Wright hit a three and got the game to within 44-42, but live hit 12 out of 14 from the line in the fourth. This was a well-played defensive game by both teams with a lot of hustle.
Wright had 10, hitting two threes; Keagan Ward had 10, 6 in the last quarter; Rhett Cearly, 8; Krypton Ward and Blue Stewart, Able Robins, Sammy Blackburn, and Lincoln Fisher all played hard. Coaches for Drumright are Jason Bray, Miles Ledgerwood and Terry Mattox.
Olive coach is Renny Nickell…
Prue Tournament
Then the Tornadoes went to the Prue Tournament. The girls schooled Billings by more than 50, and so did the boys. Both teams had to play the host team, Prue. The girls were ahead 29-5 after the first quarter and were stealing the ball a bunch. They had a 62-25 lead going into the fourth and won 66-32.
Brailyn Wright had 14, hitting two threes; Makay Reed, 15, hitting three; Lauren Janzen, 13, hitting two threes; Evie Ools, 10; Alyssa Roe, 8; hitting one three (she had 7 points in the first quarter); Addie Ingraham hit a three, and Aubree Brimmer had three.
The Prue boys team we played was the loudest team ever. I guess they thought making noise would rattle us — didn’t work — we won, 66-54.
Prue hit eight threes to keep from getting blown away by the Tornadoes.
Garrett Wright had 29 points (21 in the first half and 8 in the last quarter); Keagan Ward had 8 points and two blocked shots; Rhett Cearly, 6 points and a blocked shot; Krypton Ward had 2 points; Zaiden “Blue” Stewart had 8 points, hitting two threes. Also playing hard were Sammy Blackburn and Lincoln Fisher.
On Championship Saturday, the Drumright girls had to play a Broken Arrow homeschooled team called Aspire. It was the Land of the Giants as Aspire had a 6’ 3” girl who blocked about six shots, but she only had 3 points. But Aspire had really good threepoint shooters, as they hit 12 threes because we were trying to stop miss 6’ 3”. One girl hit five threes and she didn’t even start. I swear these dang homeschool teams are getting to be like private school teams.
Makay Reed had 7 points, hitting one three; Brianna Wright had five points on fast breaks; Lauren Janzen hit a three; Alyssa Roe had 3 points; and Aubree Brimmer had 2 points and a blocked shot.
We lost 52-20. We were down just 34-18, but Aspire went on a three-point shooting streak. The boys game with Aspire was a lot closer, but Aspire won. They were tall, but they looked muscled up, too (they looked like men), and the Tornadoes lost 52-46. The highlight of the game was the last play as Garrett Wright hit a 55-footer at the buzzer. Krypton Ward was a Tasmanian Devil out there, continuously stealing the ball and grabbing loose balls. Keagan Ward also played all out. Keaton Jensen played very hard and finished with 13 (hitting two threes). The Tornadoes were ahead 7-2 right off the bat but Aspire looked looked like a 4A team but didn’t play like it. Keagan Ward had 3; “Blue” Stewart had 1 and made a great hustle play. Athletically, Lincoln Fisher helped. Also playing hard was Sammy Blackburn.
If the Tornadoes play that hard, they will win quite a few games. By the time you read this, we will have played Schulter on Monday and Eland on Tuesday.
We will play Dove Science Friday, at home.
