Tornadoes host Oilton

Tornado Watch with Robert Marshall

Recently, the Drumright Tornadogirlsandboyshosted Oilton. The Drumright Lady Tornadoes beat Oilton 4829. The Oilton Lady Panthers struggled against the seed of the Lady Tornado press.

The Lady Tornadoes jumped out to a 17-0 lead. Aubree (Breezy) Brimmer had six points inside, getting good passes from other players.

Brailyn Wright hit a three and had five points in the first quarter. Makay Reed had four points and Lauren Janzen hit two free throws.

Kailen Roden hit two threes in the game. Janzen tore it up the second half with 15 points, hitting three threes for the game. She finished with 19 points going 4-4 from the free-throw line.

Brimmer finished with 10 points; Wright 8; Rosen with 6; Reed 4; and Torin Bray was 2-2 from the line.

Others playing hard were Evie Ools, Aubrey Alen, Macy Myers, Boston Lunsford, Zoe Neihaus, KatieJo DeShazer and Willow Mattox.

For Oilton, Aubrey McEwen hit a three and finished with 16 points (12 in the second half).

JaidenSmith had 7 points, but played very hard; Demi Kennedy had four points, hitting a three; and Molly McEwen had 2 points.

Others playing hard were Karlie Kennedy and Carrie Butler.

Drumright girls’ coaches are Lauren Campo and Alyssa Fuxa. Oilton’s coaches are Craig Kennedy and Jason James. The Lady Panthers had won two in a row going into the game.

The varsity boys was a very exciting game. It got chippy at times — most rivalry games do. Drumright won 61-56, but with Jackson Prather’s 9 points, and hitting a three, Oilton led 15-9 after one. But the Tornadoes played a lot better in the second quarter as Garrett Wright had nine points, hitting two threes and Keaton Jensen had six points during the quarter. The Tornadoes outscored Oilton19-5 and led 28-20 at the half.

Rylan McCool only had four by halftime, but drove to the basket a lot more in the second half and finished with 24, hitting a three. He was 11-14 from the line.

Foul trouble plagued Oilton and McCool fouled out.

Prather had four for the game. Late in the game the Tornadoes were trying to make sure they didn’t get a 10-second violation, Garrett Wright pulled off a great move and it was as loud as I’ve ever heard it in there. The Drumright cheerleaders were also getting the fans pumped up. The Wright move happened when the Tornadoes had a 58-56 lead. That made it 60-56 and clinched the game.

Garrett Wright had 28 points, hitting three threes; Keaton Jensen had 21, hitting a three; Keagan Ward had 7 points, some assists and rebounds. Kypton had four points and his usual great hustle; Rhett Cearly had 1 point and a few assists and a few blocked shots. Also playing hard were Sammy Blackburn, and Zaiden (Blue) Stewart.

For Oilton, McCool had 24; Jackson Prather, 19; Cody Combs, 6; Danny Rice, 4; Lynchford hit a three.

Also playing hard were Chase Brown and Colby Browning.

The Drumright Oilton teams were supposed to play Saturday night at Oilton, but Oilton had to finish a tournament at Paden, so I don’t know when the two teams will play again. Jackson Prather had a great blocked shot. Snow messed up the Glencoe Tournament as they tried to start the tournament on Thursday instead of Wednesday as many other tournaments did. Many of the teams finished their tournaments.

The Tornado teams both had two games each. The Lady Tornadoes beat the host team Glencoe by 6, but they lost to Shidler the next day by three.

The Tornado boys got the unpleasant task, as they had to play the Latta varsity boys and lost, 69-22. The next day, Drumright whipped Shidler in a revenge game and the boys won by over 20 points. The boys also had a game against Summit Christian’s JV in Broken Arrow and beat them 47-37. Keaton Jensen had 16 points; Garrett Wright had nine; Blue Stewart, 6; Sammy Blackburn, 4; Rhea Cearly, 4; Kypton Ward, 2; Keagan Ward 1, and Lincoln Fisher played hard and got one point. It was a real good night for Tyler Carter with four points on fast breaks. Also playing hard was Gunnar Wright who had an assist.

The snow has messed a lot of games up. Drumright will have possibly played two games by the time you read this. Homecoming will have been played by Tuesday against Woodland. There are two junior varsity games scheduled at home against Tulsa SAS on Monday and Wynona on Thursday and a game at Depew on Friday.

Oilton will have its senior night on Tuesday. They will play Yale, in Yale, on Thursday and play at Davenport on Friday. Oilton’s boys season has had its ups and downs and a little bit of the unusual at Depew, when they finished with four players as Rylan McCool hit a last second shot to win the game.

The Oilton Tournament was really tough this year with teams like Glencoe, Beggs, and Davenport. Newkirk was a lot better than usual. Oilton was behind Newkirk by 16. The Panthers clawed their way back and only lost 57-56 getting about four or five shots under the basket, but couldn’t make the shots and Newkirk won 57-56. Newkirk’s team was very big this year — and talented.

Oilton beat Olive on homecoming, 78-59, when Freshman Lynchford had 17 points.

Drumright coaches are Jason (Sharp Dressed Man) Bray, Mike Ledgerwood and Terry Mattox. Oilton’s coaches are Steve Welty and Cale Yancy. The Tornado team will play Hominy in districts and, are you ready for this? We get to host regionals for the first time since probably the 60s.
