Tornadoes win one, lose one

After a 2-1 first week, we played a betterthan- expected Porter team — or, you could say Friday the 13th was played on Tuesday the 10th, as Porter beat the Tornadoes, 9-0.

The Porter pitcher, No. 12, struck out six, but made us pop up six times. His defense only had one error.

Cody Gregory pitched and struck out three batters and only trailed 1-0 going into the the fourth but Porter’s batters got on a roll, then Carsen Mattox finished the game pitching. He gave up some runs also, but relief pitching is very hard. Usually there are several on are when he comes into the game. Garrett Wright got the only two hits. It just seemed like we weren’t there.

Defensive plays were made by Brady Osborne at third. Sammy Blackburn made a very good unassisted double play. Austin Tull at first, Lincoln Fisher in left, Garrett Wright at second, Cody Gregory at pitcher.

The Porter pitcher did walk two batters, but the Tornadoes couldn’t take advantage.

Hunter Kirby decided to give the Tornadoes a wake-up call going into the Yale game on Friday. Four players were playing that hadn’t started, and after one inning, the Tornadoes were up 4-0. Jay Paul Welch, a freshman, started the game at pitcher and struck out six batters in three innings.

Jagger Willing pitched most of the way, striking out 8 batters and Sammy Blackburn pitched to one batter and struck him out.

Noah Lewis pitched one inning for Yale, Striking out three. Ryan Reece pitched the second inning until the sixth and struck out seven, and Ben Whitsett in one inning, struck out one batter.

Drumright had a 5-0 lead going into the top of the third. Yale got three runs when Ryan Reece doubled in two runs and a wild pitch scored another. It was 6-3 Drumright going into the sixth, Blackburn singled, Cody Gregory was hit by a pitch in the feet, but the Yale pitcher’s fastball got away from him. They shook hands.

Jagger Willing doubled in Blackburn (Willing had some enormous foul balls before then). Then Conrad Reed had a ground out but knocked in two runs even though he was out.

Howdy Wright walked, Lincoln Fisher singled but Yale’s relief pitcher Ben Whitsett got them out of a jam. The lead appeared to be safe at 9-3, but it wasn’t.

Yale got two batters on, one walked and one was hit by a pitch.

Whitsett singled in one, an error scored another one. Ivan Starrett was hit by a pitch, then Noah Lewis singled in two runners. Jed Saunders was hit by a pitch scoring a run, but Blackburn stuck out the last batter for a 9-7 Tornado win. Blackburn was 2-3 with 2 RBIs, Jagger Willing was 1-2 with 1 RBI, Brady Osborne was 1-2; Howdy Wright, 1-1 but walked three times. Lincoln Fisher, 1-4; Austin Tull, 1-3; Keagan Ward had an RBI and walked once.

Garrett Wright walked once, Osborne walked once. Others playing in the game were Gavin Howell, Gunnar Wright, Caden Frazier, Carson Mattox (who had an RBI. Making defensive plays for the Tornadoes were Jay Paul Welch, Jagger Willing, Blackburn, Osborne at catcher, Austin Tull and Howdy Wright.

For Yale, I’m sorry, I didn’t get a couple of names — No. 2 and No. 26. No. 2 was 1-3, No. 26 was 1-2 with two RBs. He walked once. Whitest, 1-3 with one RBI; Ryan Reece, 1-3; Ryan Wallace was hit by a pitch and scored a run. Jed Saunders walked twice and was hit by a pitch, scoring an RBI; Reece had tho RBIs, Noah Lewis was 1-2 with 2 RBIs. Players making defensive plays for Yale were, Whitsett, Reece, Saunders and Lewis.

Coaches for the Tornadoes are Hunter Kirby, B. J. Osborne and Terry Mattox.

Yales coaches are Richard Baker and Brad Skinner.
