Back-to-back on the home dirt: Lady Panthers storm through district tourney

OILTON - From the fi rst pitch of the district tournament to the fi nal cheer that rolled across Lady Panther Field, Oilton's Lady Panthers looked like a team that knew exactly where they were going. They hosted, they hit, they hustled, and by the end of a long Thursday under a late-September sun, they were hoisting the Class B District 31 championship hardware for the second year in a row.

It started with the Timberlake Lady Tigers, a scrappy club that made Oilton earn every inch of dirt. In the opener, junior hurler Paydee Smith was dominant, carving through the Lady Tigers' lineup with twelve strikeouts in a Lady Panthers jumped on early mistakes - an error and a Smith single scored runs in the fi rst, and Danielle Kennedy's RBI the Karlie Kennedy, Keylee James, Jadeann Smith, and Addison Rosenquist each chipped in hits as Oilton capitalized on Timberlake errors and free passes to pull away, 8-2.

When they met Timberlake again in bracket play, it was a slugfest. Karlie Kennedy was nearly unstoppable in the box, going 4-for-5 with a double, two singles, and four RBIs. Je Cox, Aubrey McEwen, and Rosenquist all delivered timely hits, and Smith again went the distance, fanning nine despite issuing ten walks. Oilton's defense never blinked - James was fl awless at shortstop, recording nine clean plays - and the Panthers held o Timberlake 11-7 to advance to the fi nal round against Bluejacket's Lady Chieftains.

That's when the afternoon turned golden. The championship game began with Paydee Smith back in the circle, curve Bluejacket's fi rst hitter, Macy Nair, drew a walk, but Smith struck out the next two batters, then coaxed a pop-up that Aubrey McEwen squeezed at second to end the inning. The crowd clapped in rhythm as the Lady Panthers trotted in - and in the bottom of the fi rst, there was a loud kaboom.

Karlie Kennedy ripped a hard leadoff Je Cox followed with a bunt that forced the Tigers' defense into confusion, and when Danielle Kennedy drew a walk, the chopped a grounder to second, the throw skidding past the bag and Cox crossed home. Moments later, a passed ball brought short was misplayed, Rosenquist scored, and led before the bleachers had settled.

By the second inning, the Panthers were locked in. Anniston Ford reached on catcher's interference, then swiped second and third as Kennedy worked a walk. The fourth began innocently enough - Ford singled to left, Kennedy walked again, and Cox dropped a perfect sacrifi ce bunt to move them along. Danielle Kennedy drew another walk to with yet another free pass to force in a run, and then Paydee Smith delivered the knockout. On a 3-1 count, she cranked into a fastball and crushed it to deep center, clearing the bases for a three-run double that sent the crowd into chaos. When Keylee James followed with a line-drive RBI single, it was 10-0 and the Lady Chieftains were starting to gather up their stu .

Smith stayed sharp, striking out two in the fourth, but Bluejacket's Nair managed a walk and came around to score on a Jaida Giles single in the fi fth. It would be their only run of the half of the fourth frame, Kennedy reached again on a dropped fl y in right, and Cox ended it with a bullet up the middle that plated Kennedy for the 11-1 run-rule victory.

The Lady Panthers fi nished with seven hits, nine walks, and ten stolen bases - Ford and Smith each took multiple bags - while committing zero errors. Smith closed her masterpiece with nine strikeouts and only three hits allowed.
