Lady Tornado fast-pitch softball has begun. The team is 1-4, losing its first four games. We were playing a brutal schedule — playing Dale, who is usually number one or close to it, and Hominy twice. We only beat Hominy 1-0. We played pretty well, but we’ve given up some big innings. We’re still pretty young. I was critical of them, and I apologize for that.
We have three freshmen that start. There’s only one senior that I know of. In the opener at Hominy, the Ladies played Hominy at Hominy. Freshman Lauren Janzen got on base every time, but the Ladies lost 6-1, stranding nine or ten baserunners.
I watched the first game on YouTube, but Hominy had technical difficulties. By the time I got it fixed, it was the fifth inning. Senior Evie Ools pitched on a hurt ankle and did what she could, but a five-run second inning spelled doom for the Lady Tornadoes.
The Lady Tornadoes then played a decent Crescent team, but one we should’ve beaten. We lost 4-3. We had them down 1-0 — Lauren Janzen beat out an infield single and Evie doubled in Janzen to lead 1-0. But we gave up two runs in the bottom of the first; Crescent hit a two-run homer. Still, we struck out nine batters for the game.
Carson got two more in the bottom of the third with two hits. The Lady Tornadoes got two runs in the top of the fourth. Kaiton Vann hit a double, Aubrey Brimmer walked, and a wild pitch scored Vann. A ground-out scored Brimmer, but the Ladies could get no more. McKay Reed walked but was stranded.
After losing to Hominy 7-0, we had to play Dale with their pitcher, “Boo” Herber, who throws some nuclear pitches. They beat us 11-0. First two batters hit right back to Ools, and I’m thinking things are going real good. They did get two runs in the inning, but we gave up seven in the second. Our youth showed again as we made three errors.
Herber only pitched one inning and one batter, but Wilson doubled — that hit just about went over the fence off her. We couldn’t get any more. Dale put in another pitcher who was real good. We got two runners on in the bottom of the second — Aubrey Allen singled and freshman McKay Reed hit a long double — but again we couldn’t get any runs.
The story was: we played Dale, and the one bad inning hurt.
The next game our players grew up and we beat Perkins for seventh place in our part of the bracket. There were 16 teams, eight in two different brackets. The Lady Tornadoes only led 2-0 going into the top of the fifth, but Cushing transfer Alyssa Roe blasted a triple and the Ladies scored five runs after that.
Brinley Christie’s sacrifice fly scored Roe. Brimmer walked. Vann singled. Another freshman, Boston Mumford, doubled in Brimmer. Reed singled. Addie Ingram walked. Janzen buntsingle knocked in Lunsford. Ool’s single knocked in Reed and Ingram.
Ingram was sick all last week and is better now. Leading 7-0, Perkins led off with a hit by the catcher, who was 1-for-2. But our defense held. It was the best defense played all week.
We made an amazing catch in right field — Aubrey Allen and Aubrey Brimmer both made good plays. Allen handled second. Brimmer was on first. Allen made plays at second and Christie made a good play on a bunt. Catcher, short, and third all had good games.
The Ladies had 13 hits: Reed, 3-for-4 with 2 RBI; Ools, 2-for-3 with 2 RBI; Janzen, 2-for-3 with 1 RBI; Vann, 2-for-3 with 1 RBI; Roe, 1-for-3 with 1 RBI; Ingram, 1-for-2 with a walk; Brinley Christie, an RBI and a good game at catcher.
This week, the Ladies will play Strother at Strother (which is hard to find) on Tuesday. Then we will go to the Cashion Tournament Thursday through Saturday.
The coaches are Leslie Robinson and Alyssa Fuxa, who did a good job getting the girls ready. When you’re playing Dale, I shouldn’t be critical.
Thursday night the Tornado football team will scrimmage with Thomas at home.
