Quinton shuts down Drumright Tornadoes 28-14

Friday night Quinton visited the Tornadoes. Last year the Tornadoes humbled Quinton 36-6 Friday night didn’t go well for the Tornadoes as Quinton used a strong running game with an occasional pass.

Tied at 0-0 after the first quarter Quinton erupted for 22 straight points on a 50 yard touchdown by their quarterback. Then the Tornadoes turned the ball over and Quinton took advantage of that scoring five plays one after the other from 27 yards out. The Tornadoes came back into place on a personal foul on Quinton then Aiden Lumpkins scored on a 35 yard pass from Garrett Wright to make the score 14-6 Quinton. But on the kick off Quinton secored from 85 yards out.

Coach Chris Elerick talked about, “Three or four plays hurt us. We also got down to their 10 yard line twice and didn’t score. I thought we played better against Quinton then we did Garber. We have some good players that are out right now for various reasons the players are trying to arm tackle instead of tackling like they’re supposed to. Quinton executed it better than we did.”

The second half was better than the first we outscored Quinton 8-6 the rest of the game.

We open the second half on an 18 play, 74 yard drive for a touchdown to lower the gap to 22-14. Garrett Wright had 48 yards of it. Cordae McCormick had 21 yards and Sammy Blackburn caught a five yard pass. Connor and Reed caught a two point conversion pass from Wright to get it within 22-14. But then Quinton right after second on a seven play, 65 yard drive — all of it on the ground.

Coach Elerick continued, “The three teams we played are a combined 8-1; all three have a very good team.

Sammy Blackburn intercepted a pass that was Quinton’s only turnover. Others with tackles were Chase Creekmore, Max Grey, Carsen Mattox, Garrett Wright, Conrad Reed, Kamari Lovis, Keegan Ward, Aiden Lumpkins, Howdy Wright, Gavin Howell, and Kypton Ward.

In the second quarter the Tornadoes got to the 1 yard line as McCormick caught a 40-yard pass during the drive. We got down to the 1 yard line Sammy Blackburn looked like he scored but no cigar — the officials weren’t having it.A holding call later marred up this drive. Wright did a good job kicking and panting. Several turnovers hurt the Tornadoes also. McCormick also had a tackle.

Coach Elerich said, “Canton is 0-3. I’m not worried about Canton, I am worried about us.”

Homecoming is Friday night at 7 p.m. the coronation should be around 5:30 p.m. Please support the Tornadoes. In years past a lot of people leave after the coronation.
